My mom is in her upper 80's and, until recently, she was very healthy. Several years ago, she broke her hip, and since then, I've always taken her to her appointments, and when she sees the doctor, I come in with her so I can assist her in getting changed and write down pertinent information. My mom is perfectly able to speak and understand things. She has a great memory and she isn't deaf. Sure, she has white hair, and she uses a cane, but don't be fooled! That cane is more of a weapon than anything! She only uses it because she doesn't want to risk another fall, and the cane is only used when we go out.
So please explain to me: Why do people talk to me instead of her? It's her illness/appointment, not mine! It pisses me off! I make a point to look the offenders in the eye and I tell them that she's the one they should be taking to, not me, yet it seems they need constant reminders. Also, please don't shout or speak loudly to her. If you speak clearly and in a normal tone of voice, it'll be just fine, thank you. If I have a question, I'll address you, but other than that, please just pretend I'm not in the room with you, okay? Now enjoy your weekend.
Welcome! I live in a world where nothing seems organized to anyone but me. I'm constantly thinking. Even when my life is in an upheaval, I know where my keys are, unless you move them... I can't remember names or words for things, so I use similar words (Kitchen = Garage) I call very few people "friend" It's a title you earn. I don't use it loosely.Don't like my thoughts? Click the white"x"in the little red box and it'll go away. Still here? Enjoy the ride!
good for you! So many people do exactly what you are describing when dealing with the elderly. I find if you just speak kindly you get all you need. I love the elderly folks I deal with and in my neighbourhood there are quite a few ..but I see things and I don't like it. You are correct, our elderly deserve respect. Its about time someone stood up and said so. :) ty
